What can I expect?

  • What happens during an acupuncture treatment?

    • A health history is taken along with a lifestyle evaluation, brief physical examination, and pulse and tongue diagnosis.  Approximately 10 to 15 needles are inserted and then retained for roughly 30 minutes within a tranquil and restful environment.  An initial appointment is usually 1-1 ½ hours in length, and follow up visits are approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.

  • What do the needles feel like?  Are they safe?

    • Acupuncture needles are slender, stainless steel, pre-sterilized, single-use, disposable needles.  The needles are inserted just beneath the surface of the skin.  The sensation varies from person to person, from nothing at all to a dull ache or tingling sensation.  Most patients find the treatment to be very relaxing.

  • How many treatments will I need?

    • For a specific health issue, the number of treatments required will vary depending upon the severity of the condition and the health of the individual. Generally speaking, the longer you have had a condition, the more treatments you will need to get lasting results. For overall, ongoing wellness, individuals respond best with weekly or bi-weekly treatments.

  • Is acupuncture covered by insurance?

    • A growing number of insurance companies will reimburse for acupuncture treatments.  Consult your insurance provider for the terms of coverage on your specific policy. If you have out of network acupuncture benefits, we will be happy to bill your insurance company on your behalf.

  • What should I do before/after an acupuncture treatment?

    • Be sure to have eaten a small meal or snack a few hours before treatment.  Avoid rigorous exercise directly before or after treatment, but mild exercise such as walking can further benefit the effects of treatment.  Avoid stressful situations, coffee and alcohol before and after treatment.

  • Is there an option to cancel an existing appointment?

    • Yes. Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice, other than emergencies, will be charged $50.
